MOMENT OF INERTIA OF A FLY WHEEL

Product Description

Experiments:

To determine the moment of inertia of a flywheel about its own axis of rotation

A flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy. The amount of energy stored in a flywheel is proportional to the square of its rotational speed. Due to this relationship, Flywheels make excellent instruments for experimentation on Moment of Inertia.

A flywheel is a disc with a horizontal axle passing through its center of mass. The two ends of the axle are mounted with bearings as shown in Fig. This arrangement is kept at a distance H from the ground level.

A string of length just equal to the height H is taken. The string is wound tightly and uniformly on the axle of the flywheel by hooking its one end to a vertical pin fixed to the axle of the flywheel.

A mass m is attached to the other end of the string. If the mass is allowed to fall, it unwinds the string and sets the flywheel into rotational motion. When the string unwinds completely, it detaches from the axle and the mass falls to the ground. The flywheel continues to rotate a few more turns due to its rotational inertial and comes to rest after some time due to its frictional force.
