Experiments: To determine the value of lathe mechanical equivalent of heat by Searle's friction cone apparatus.


1. Friction cone apparatus with revolution counter and rotational disc and rotational handle

It consists of two metal cones A and B which fit closely one into the other.The two cones are held in a metal box, lined with cork to prevent the loss of heat. PULLY The outer cone A5 fixed at the bottom to a spindle which can be rotated by means of a hand wheel. The number of revolutions are recorded by counter. Due to the rotation of the outer cone A, the inner cone B tends to rotate but the rotation is prevented by applying a suitable external force M g. This is done by means of a wooden disc D fitted to the upper end of the inner cone. This disc is kept stationary by applying a tangential force, exerted by a string which passes over a frictionless - pulley. The disc D has a hole in its centre through which a thermometer T can be . introduced inside the inner cone to note the temperature of liquid (water) contained in it.
